Gram panchayat passes prohibition resolution

Navi Mumbai: The Karanjade gram panchayat in Navi Mumbai passed a resolution to implement complete prohibition on Tuesday. After receiving requests from women, cooperative housing societies and others, two special meetings were held by the gram panchayat.

In the first meeting, women passed the prohibition resolution and then the gram sabha passed it.

The proposal will now be sent to the collector for further procedures.

While Karajade village has a population of around 4,000, the entire CIDCO node of Karanjade, which includes the gram panchayat, has a population of 50,000.

“Some women’s organisations, individuals and housing societies requested us for prohibition in our gram panchayat area,” Karanjade sarpanch Rameshwar Angre said. “We called two meetings on Tuesday on public demand. The first meeting of women passed the resolution. Thereafter, the gram sabha passed the resolution.Angre said the resolution would be sent to the collector and the process of implementing prohibition will begin. “Those studying and the next generation will not get addicted,” he said.
